Is There Any Cures For Colic?

Everyone knows that babies cry. Newborns and infants can and will cry for many different reasons. The is of course the main reasons for tears are the essentials: the “Feed Me!” howl followed by the “Dirty Diaper” decibel busting bawl, followed by the “Mr. or Miss Cranky” sleepy-time sobs.

But babies also cry when they are feeling overwhelmed and frustrated; need or want your attention, are uncomfortable or just aren’t feeling well. But nothing is more distressful than the sudden, piercing scream of the colic.

Colic is thought to be a developmental issue with newborns’ bodily systems having trouble adjusting to life outside their mother’s womb. The colic may be caused by too air being swallowed during nursing or from excessive crying or by trapped tummy gas or slow moving stools.

No one really knows for sure but those hours long crying jags and frizzle and irritate the nerves of even the most patient and understanding of parents. All you want are some safe and effective colic cures that will help you and your baby get some sleep.

If you have suffering through an excessive bout of crying with your infant then this article can help you find some cures for colic crying that really do work.

Increase the level of TLC as much as you can

If possible hold or cradle your baby as often as possible. One way to do is to carry your baby in a baby sling or pouch as you move around the house or outside the home. The more contact the baby has with you the calmer they will be in the long term.

Massage your baby’s belly several times a day

Rubbing your infant’s stomach with gentle but firm strokes in a clockwise motion can help relieve trapped gas (thought to be one cause of colic), move out wastes and calms them.

Use rhythmic motion

It is not wonder that rocking babies to sleep is one of the most popular cures for colic. Any type of “musical-like” movement can help: be it from a baby swing or swaying bassinet, or from a short drive around the neighborhood in a car seat. Of course there is always slow motion side-to-side swaying that all parents automatically adopt.

Singling lullabies

It is no accident that these simple yet soothing little songs, are found in every human culture since ancient times. The sound of the human voice (not matter how off-key) pitched in a soft and low murmur has quieted and calmed colicky children for millenniums.

Using white noise

Babies aren’t picky when it comes to soothing sounds. If your singing voice causes the neighborhood dogs to howl, you can try using white noise. Some parents have found that sounds of vacuum cleaners, fans, clothes dryers, radio station static, table top water fountains, mixers, aquariums and of course rain as great ways to sooth the colicky beast.

Change up the feeding schedules

Babies on schedules sometimes develop colic. If possible feed your child when they are hungry not when its “time”. Watch what your infant is eating. Change the formula from cow’s milk to a lactose-free or soy blend is they appear to have allergies to milk sugar. Or change from soy to something else if they having difficulties gaining weight.

And if you breast-feed, remember your diet and what you eat can also effect the baby. So watch what you eat also!
